Earlier this year I produced and designed a show for an NYC based singer, Marey. The Scandinavian dream pop artist draws inspiration from 80s ambiance and classical symphonies. Marey weaves a narrative of vulnerability as well as playful melodic musings in her craft, that invites people to dance and cry in their bedrooms.
Growing up in Tanzania, Finland-native Marey jumped between worlds resulting in a third-culture kid experience filled with contradictions and inner turmoil. Her music grew out of a desire to reconcile the joy and confusion of her identity in a self-created sonic dreamworld. She explores vulnerability, religion, queerness, flirtation and satire in her work.
One can hear undertones of arcade sounds and gadgets, familiar for millennials today. Her style and genre heavily alluded to the vaporwave aesthetic. Below you will find snippets from her live show, visually designed by me in editing softwares such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Create Suite, and TouchDesigner.
