Designing a new digital experience for the Salon Industry
Contextual Background
I designed SalonTrack for a niche audience who have frequent salon visits alongside a busy work schedule. The app serves as a reminder for users to take their next/upcoming salon appointment. By doing so, the product aims to aid users maintain their beauty upkeep. Additionally, having the app would result in reduced salon visits as the user may choose to club all their upcoming appointments in the span of one visit.
Contextual Background
There were multiple pain points that I wanted to explore and explore. After conducting interviews with the target demographic the follow were the top three:
Students / working adults who tend to have frequent salon needs, often find it challenging to keep returning to the salon with their busy schedule.

A hectic work life balance of the target audience makes it difficult for them to keep track of what service is upcoming and only remember to book an appoint for that particular service when they have attend a social event (eg. eyebrow threading, hair removal, etc)
Certain customers are enrolled in salon treatments (eg, Keratin Treatment, Hair color) or have their hair shaped in a particular style that they’d like to maintain. Some of them might not be able to determine when is the right time to go back to the salon in order to get that service again to maintain their beauty upkeep. 
User Persona
I conducted interviews of college students and working professional in Mumbai and New York City. I found that women were more drawn to such an app as compared to men. The interviews aided the UI/UX design of the application.  Below is a profile example that represents the age range and persona that app targets.

Interview Highlights
"I  just got a pixie cut so I think a salon reminder would help me maintain my style. I don't exactly know when I need to back to the salon to keep my hair this way."
"It would be nice to sync up salon trips with my sister so we can have each other's company when we go"
User Flows
Creating a user flow map helped create a structure for designing the low fidelity wireframes.
Design Process
I worked on low-fidelity wireframes. Most of the features were interconnected and depended on the same process of setting a reminder for oneself. One of the toughest challenges in designing this was finding a way to make the new added features seem intuitive and less complex in order for the audience to use the technology.
Visual Flow
Next came the high-fidelity development stage. The visual design had to be appealing and engaging. I found most salon applications to have an upbeat, non-traditional color-scheme and thus decided to do the same. Below is a mood-board for the visual design for the wireframes.
Core Feature 1: Creating a profile
User creates a profile and fills in details about their previous salon appointments in order to get personalized reminders. The app allows creation of multiple profiles of different people (family, roommates, etc)
Core Feature 2: Receiving Reminders + Booking Appointments
After creating their profile, the user automatically receives reminders to take their next salon appointment.
Core Feature 3: Video Tutorials
Salon Track has an in-app function wherein users can view video tutorials for the services they're interested in. This is especially useful during the time of COVID-19 and social distancing, when users may not be comfortable stepping outdoors.
